A zone is not a frost date

Hardiness zones describe the coldest night of an average winter. They tell you which perennials survive. They do not tell you when your last spring frost comes, and two gardens in the same zone can be weeks apart.

Each row shows the spread inside one zone, from the frost records matched to every ZIP. That is why the calendar starts from your weather station.

How each date is made

  1. 1

    Your ZIP is located

Matched to the nearest NOAA station with frost records. You see the distance, the height difference and how much to trust the match.

  2. 2

    Frost dates are read

The station's record gives the median last spring and first fall frost, plus the dates with only a 10% risk.

  3. 3

    A rule is applied

Such as "transplant two weeks after the last frost". We use a rule written for your state when one exists, and say so when we borrow one.

  4. 4

    No guessing

Where no source covers your climate, frost-free coasts or mountains with frost in every month, the calendar tells you instead.
